President's Message - April 2024

Hello Fellow GRS Members and Friends,

Well, we are now heading into the hot summer months and with all the stress the heat brings on both the roses and ourselves. This is why most of our maintenance and planting should have been taken care of by now. But if you are behind, then most of what still needs done should be done in early or late hours of each day. The heat last summer was brutal to say the least. Stay well hydrated if you find yourself trying to work duringthe hottest part of the day. Take lots of breaks.

The Kanapaha Spring Festal was not all that nice weatherwise. Saturday was very slow, but we, the GRS volunteers, sold 55 rose plants. Sunday, it cleared up around 2:30 pm and the sun came out just before the close hour of 5pm. We did manage to see a few more roses but no sell out. A total of 82 out of 92 roses were sold. GRS managed to raise a couple hundred dollars for our treasury. I was asked if we would like to do this same arrangement with Rose Petals at the Kanapaha Fall event. My thoughts are, yes in hope of better weather and more roses to sell so our profit would be greater. But volunteers are needed, especially if you know about Hybrid Teas and their care.

Don’t forget, we will be having a society vote on the changes to the GRS bylaws at our April meeting. This issue we are voting on was sent out the required 30 days prior to voting. This is regarding changing the President’s two year term to – two consecutive year terms. This action is being suggested since a new nominee to serve as president has no one stepping up to serve. It is very apparent that if we have no president in the future, we will need to disband the club. That would ba a shame since GRS has been around many years. Times are changing in regards to every type of club and finding solutions to attracting and maintain members is very difficult as we all know. Please, let us do all we can to keep GRS alive in our community.

I hope to see all members at the April meeting to make this vote. A required majority vote is needed to pass the suggested bylaws change. Come and learn how to feed your roses and enjoy Consulting Rosarian, Art Wade’s, program. This will help to get your roses off to a great start this year!
