Dear GRS Rosarians,
Congratulations, Gainesville Rose Society! We did it! Under the direction of our very able co-chairs Ralph and Jean Stream, we hosted a great rose show and convention with over 90 people attending. The days went very smoothly. Our own Ann Sherwood presented a very informative East Asian arrangement workshop on Friday, followed by interesting programs, beautiful rose show, door prizes, basket raffle, and banquet. American Rose Society President Diane Sommers spoke at the banquet about her vision for ARS. Ralph Stream was awarded the DSD Outstanding Horticulture Judge Award for 2021.
The icing-on-the-cake is that financially, we came out in the black and were able to return the advance from the Deep South District and share profits. Thanks to all who helped in any way. On Sunday, November 14, we will welcome Wayne and Lyndy Myers. Wayne is a Master Rosarian and past District CR Chairman. He will talk about “New Roses for your Garden.” It features Cindy Dale’s & Ray Guillebeau’s current favorite modern showquality varieties. For no-spray gardens he will present the 2021 winners of the American Rose Trials for Sustainability which grew from the Earth Kind trials, & the 2021 & 2022 American Garden Rose Selections which replaced All-American Rose Selections as a national trial, but like EarthKind is no spray). The meeting will be at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church across from Santa Fe College.
The Memorial Committee has met and Jean Stream will give a report. The updated meeting schedule for the rest of the year is as follows:
- December 12: Holiday party at Melrose Homemakers Club building
- January 9: Rose Round Table at First Christian Church
- February 13: Pruning workday at Kanapaha Gardens
- March 13: Rooting workshop and garden visit at home of Dr. Joe Rush, Melrose
- April 10: Rose Fragrance with Dan Mills at First Christian Church
- May 15: Picnic, site TBA
- June 12: Ice Cream Social, site TBA
