President's Message - October 2021

Dear GRS Rosarians,

Lots of news! DSD Convention and Rose Show: First, under the great leadership of our Chairmen Ralph and Jean Stream, the fall DSD Convention and Rose Show is filling up. They had the vision to see the potential for success! We need to see you all at our meeting at 2 p.m. October 10 where we will be finalizing plans for the convention and working together on some last minute projects. Also please bring a rose for a short “Show and Tell program.”

We want to clarify that we will have “Volunteer” status for those of you (and we need all of you), who will be helping, at the convention, e.g., helping set up, clerking at the rose show, etc. To enter the rose show, attend the arrangement workshop, any of the programs, and banquet, you must be registered with the convention.

You don’t have to be an expert to enter the rose show. If each of our members enters a few roses and a photograph or two, we will have a nice show. Photographs may also be turned in Friday after 4 p.m. in addition to Saturday before 10 a.m. The schedule for the show, which lists the rules and which roses go where, is on our website, deepsouthdistrict.org, and printed schedules will be available. If you have never won a blue ribbon in an ARS sanctioned show, you are eligible to enter the Novice class. Help will be available from other exhibitors in the prep room.

I am still looking for a medium size teapot decorated with roses to include in a “Vintage Tea and Roses” raffle basket. Please let me know if you have one to donate.

Good News and Bad News: The good news is that our treasurer, Dan Mills, has gotten an early November date for his hip replacement surgery. The bad news is that his Rose Fragrance program will have to be postponed until 2022. The good news is that Wayne Myers will be with us November 14. He always has something interesting to tell us about.

October 10 and November 14 meetings at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church, 3411 NW 83rd St., Gainesville, across from Santa Fe College.

Corrections to 2021-2022 booklet: Any address list soon needs additions or corrections of errors that have slipped in. Please correct Suzanne Beckham’s name. Kathy Porter’s telephone number is 352-259-8196. Loretta Manning’s current address is unknown.
