“The War of Roses” comes Sunday, March 8, to our Gainesville Rose Society meeting. Van Sherwood will be master of ceremonies. We will share and learn a lot of interesting facts from the world of roses. Meeting starts at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church.
According to Wikipedia, “The Wars of the Roses were a series of English civil wars for control of the throne of England fought between supporters of two rival cadet branches of the royal House of Plantagenet: the House of Lancaster, represented by a red rose, and the House of York, represented by a white rose. Eventually, the wars eliminated the male lines of both families. The conflict lasted through many sporadic episodes between 1455 and 1487, but there was related fighting before and after this period between the parties. Eventually the two factions were united under the Tudor Henry VII and the roses combined.”
But what about roses for St. Patrick’s Day? Of course, there’s the Green Rose and the hybrid tea St. Patrick. Also consider the mini Green Ice whose flowers are described as white to soft green. There are over two dozen roses whose name starts with “Irish” including Charm, Courage, Elegance, Eyes, Gold, Heartbreaker, Hope, Mist, Morn, and Rover, to name a few.
The Gainesville Rose Society was well represented with winners in the American Rose Society 2019 Digital Photography Contest. Approximately 650 photos were entered. Congratulations to our winning photographers.
In the Youth Division Charles Zeulke got an Honorable Mention with his lovely photo of Belinda’s Dream. Charles and his entry appear in the latest American Rose Magazine.
In the Adult Division, Ann Sherwood took first place in Modern Arrangement with her own arrangement. She also swept first, second, and third with photos of her Oriental Arrangements.
The Masters Class is highly competitive. Entrants have previously won 5 or more blue ribbons in the ARS contest. Richard (Dick) Howard won Honorable Mention for a photo of one of Jean Stream’s arrangements and second place in Abstract/Impressionist with Playgirl.
Another of Jean Stream’s arrangements won second place for photographer Norm Rescot. Look for these winning photos in future issues of The American Rose.
