May is upon us and there has been a change in our Picnic date. We will meet at Rose Petals Nursery, 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 28th. A great way to start our Memorial Day weekend.
It will be really nice to relax and talk a little about the rose show. Thank you, Jean, for doing a super job with chairing and keeping us on target. Was fun wearing our new shirts too. Great idea.
It was exciting to see more visitors at the show and so special having Lee greet each one. As you see by Jean’s Round-up message, it does take a lot of coordination and work. Thank you to each for your special part. Great job by all! Congratulations to all the winners! I hope to get some pictures on the website.
This year has been a real challenge trying to keep our roses hydrated. We have counted 4.75” of rain in our area over the past 8 or so months. Even by using water from our canal, our roses haven’t performed like they do when Mother Nature blesses us with rain.
They are growing much shorter overall and the petals lose their substance much quicker. This being said, we all need to keep an eye on our watering. Pots are especially a problem since the soil in them dries out much quicker.
I am so excited and looking forward to next year with new leadership and new ideas. There will be plenty of opportunities for all of us to support them by writing articles, doing programs, and taking leadership roles. Special talents that each of us have and use will build a strong membership. We will be installing these new officers at the Ice Cream Social in June. Jean Giesel, our new VP will be in Alaska so we will need a designated fill-in for her.
I truly have appreciated the great support that I have received while serving as President. It has been a growing experience and a fun one as well.
The GRS outreach day at the ACE Hardware in Melrose on April 15th was pretty low key but was fun. We did have a few people interested in growing roses. Lee collected names and email addresses so I will send them the newsletter. Some of these may have been our visitors at the rose show. Thanks to those who helped (Lee and Ralph for their CR expertise), or just came by to visit. ACE had lots of really nice plants for sale and some interesting vendors. It is always nice to be out in the community talking roses. (See a couple of pictures on page 6.)
I hear some of you have attended other rose shows and have won. Fill us in on the details at the picnic. Always nice to share what other Rose Clubs are doing and how we support them.
The sign-up list of food items for the picnic is on page 4 so check this over if you need a reminder. If you have not yet signed up, just bring what you would like to share. We will relax, eat and enjoy our time together. I do have a fun challenge activity we will work on together. Nothing difficult I promise.
