President's Message - April 2017

Hello Everyone,

Is it exciting to see all the new growth on the trees and plants? All the spring plant sales have shown us that there are always some new flowering varieties to try.

The Spring Plant sale at Kanapaha was fun. We met lots of interesting people and we had a chance to invite them to our rose show. Many were young first time homeowners considering new rose gardens. Was a nice way to encourage them not to be afraid to try growing roses. It was also fun to encourage some old timers not to be fearful when pruning their roses this Spring. Repeat customers were excited to tell Cyd how beautiful their plants were after one or two years growth. Nice to see so many people who are actually enjoying their roses. Thanks to all who helped and especially Cyd and Art for setting up and Dan for making sure we had plenty of literature to share. Great job!

April is time for GRS to shine in the community with our annual Rose Show. I would encourage each of you to consider Is it exciting to see all the new growth on the trees and plants? April is time for GRS to shine in the community with our annual Rose Show. I would encourage each of you to consider bringing a few roses to show even if you have never done it. Be thinking what you have and review the show schedule to see where it fits. We want the public to see the wide array of beautiful roses that grown in our area. It is fun and certainly not difficult.

We will spend time at the meeting on the 9th going over details about the show and questions you may have. It will be so critical that each of us keep our eyes open for ways to use our new facility as efficient and effective as possible. A GRS Team effort will yield the greatest success. A lot of work has been done already, so please come and help tweak the final touches so we will all be ready on the 21st for set up and 22nd for the 44th Annual Rose Show. (See page 5-6 for “Clerks Instructions” as a review.

We will be electing our new officers for next year at the meeting as well. We will be planning some more “fun” days, so if you have ideas for that or programs you would like to see next year, please let Jean Giesel or me know.

One note we will need to discuss is the date for the May picnic. Cyd and Art will be on a trip to DC and VA our scheduled meeting date of 5-21. We can move it to the 28th and RPN will be available. So, be prepared to decide about moving the date or other options. We certainly want as many attend as possible to enjoy this fun time.

Don’t forget that we are planning a Nursery Day at ACE Hardware in Melrose, Jean Giesel will give us details so it is still not too late to help.

Please check out the great article by Ann Sherwood about the Leafcutting Bees. I know we all have seen their artwork. Now we understand what it is all about! Thanks Ann!

We will take some time at the meeting share our rose growing situations and time for the CRs to answer your specific questions. I do hope your roses are happy and healthy. I can’t wait to see some of Ralph’s new varieties in bloom this year.

See you at 2:00 pm. on the 9th (Palm Sunday).

- President, Jean Stream
