President's Welcome

Here it is the end of January and we still have roses in the garden. Surprised they all did not get zapped and turn to mush. It has been about 5 weeks since Ralph sprayed the garden and as expected blackspot is now appearing. Hopefully I can get them sprayed soon. All in all, they still look pretty nice with a good amount of foliage. Pruning is just around the corner.

What a nice Mid-Winter Meeting. One highlight of the weekend included seeing Willie Mae receive her Bronze Medal recognition and her awards for her photos. Congratulations!

The truly best part of the MWM was the great teamwork involved. Each of our Teams worked so well together making the whole experience wonderful. We will recognize our workers at the February meeting. Dan will share the financial results at the February meeting too. Thank you one and all!

Our next event will be our annual rose show April 16th. This too is fun for us as a club. Please keep in mind we will need every bloom we can find to make the show a success for the public to enjoy. If each of us brings just a few blooms, we will have plenty. Arrangers, start thinking now.

Is life a real challenge? I often think of our forefathers and how they endured to lay the groundwork for us. We received notice this week of the death of Wilhelm Kordes, III, one of the great rose pioneers. He will be greatly missed. A pioneer among us is Linda Rengarts. We all know of her great work with Dudley Farms and how she used her knowledge to beautify that special property. Linda has been unable to keep up with the maintenance, especially weed pulling on the fence row to the entrance. February 14th (Valentine’s Day) we will meet at Dudley and tackle some pruning and weed pulling.

I hope to see the whole GRS Team at Dudley with gloves, rakes and pruners. Let’s “pull” together and make this a fun day. We will have our brief meeting on the Farm porch first. (If it is a rainy day, we will go to the Rose Petals Nursery).

Let us show our appreciations to Linda for being a great pioneer lady! See you at Dudley.

The President's Welcome is featured in the GRS Newsletter each month. February's edition can be found by clicking here.
